How do Pear Tree students benefit from not using textbooks?

Using a mixture of non-fiction books and a novel study instead of relying on a textbook provides our students with the following benefits:

  1. 🌍 Diverse, In-Depth Content: Say goodbye to boring, generic content, and hello to a world of diverse, rich, and meaningful learning experiences! Novels can immerse students in different worlds and perspectives, while non-fiction books can provide real-world examples and insights into different topics.
  2. 🤔 Critical Thinking: Encouraging students to analyze different perspectives and ideas, our approach helps them become discerning, critical thinkers!
  3. ❤️ Empathy & Perspective-Taking: By exposing students to various experiences and perspectives, we help them develop empathy and a better understanding of different cultures and viewpoints.
  4. 💭 Literacy Development: Reading a variety of texts supports literacy development by exposing students to different writing styles and structures.
  5. 🎨 Creativity & Expression: Our approach offers opportunities for students to express themselves creatively and develop their own ideas.

How are books chosen at Pear Tree School? 📚🌟

We carefully select high-quality non-fiction books and novels from respected publishers, ensuring that the content is accurate, reliable, and age-appropriate.

The non-fiction books are from respected publishers (like DK, National Geographic, and Usborne) that are newer texts and that are more likely to provide accurate and reliable information; they are also selected to be appropriate for the age and wider reading level of our students.

Novel studies are decided upon based on conversations between the classroom teacher and Pear Tree directors 👩‍🏫📚🤝.

What about leveled readers? 📚🔢

And what about leveled readers? We get students to transition to ‘real’ publications as quickly as possible, because let’s be honest – leveled readers don’t exactly inspire a love for reading.

As such, equipping our students with the ability and confidence to transition to proper reading books is super important at Pear Tree School. 👧📚👦

Conclusion

So, parents, ask yourself this: Would you prefer your child to learn from a single, dry textbook, or from a variety of engaging, professionally-made non-fiction books and captivating novels?
