Our Upper Middle Years Program will prepare your child for more than just high school; it will prepare them for life far beyond school.
Grades 8-9 Upper Middle Years
As a private elementary school, Grades 8 to 9 are the years in which your child begins to mature. To support your child through this transition, Pear Tree Elementary’s teachers will play even greater roles as mentors and strong, positive role models.
Pear Tree Elementary will help your child develop the patience and tenacity needed to work primarily in a collaborative, project-based learning environment. Your child will learn to care about quality and performing to their best abilities. They will learn to take calculated risks and to learn from their mistakes. They will also learn to play an effective role in any team. What is more, your child will ‘learn how to learn’, so that they will flourish in any academic institution beyond the utopia of Pear Tree Elementary.
Primary goals are to develop:
- Patience and tenacity to producing high-quality work
- The ability to ‘learn how to learn’
- Excellent research skills
- The humility to make mistakes and to learn from peers
- Stronger leadership abilities
- More advanced higher-level thinking skills
- Proficient public speaking and presentation skills
- Further experiential learning through outdoor education
Math at Pear Tree
Math is a skills-based subject (in contrast to science and social studies, which are more knowledge-based). Math skills are to be used, not simply memorized. As such, at Pear Tree Elementary, math skills embedded within themes; they are tied to social studies (quantities, statistics), science (weights, speeds, measurements), and business (financial literacy).
As such, students at Pear Tree learn math in context. Math at our school is connected to real life and is truly meaningful. At the same time, working with real-life numbers means that it is challenging!
Consequently, math at Pear Tree is more engaging and more challenging than traditional math classes.
Literacy at Pear Tree
Like math, language arts is a skills-based subject. Traditional approaches to reading and writing involve practicing such skills with no real purpose beyond mastering those skills. Reading and writing are skills to be applied, and that’s exactly what we do at Pear Tree Elementary!
At Pear Tree, reading and writing skills are interwoven into every part of our themes. We don’t use textbooks. Instead, students constantly read both fiction and non-fiction books related to the themes. Each term, students study a novel connected to one of the themes. This repeated practice throughout the year enables Pear Tree’s students to develop stronger analytical skills.
Pear Tree students quickly develop truly amazing reading and writing skills for their ages from becoming familiar with these words over a semester and having constant opportunities to practice!
