As part of our ‘Canada: Then’ theme, our Community 2 students visited Burnaby Village Museum for two workshops: Tools & Fuels and the 3Rs.

With any historical course at Pear Tree Elementary, the experience has to be both experiential and connected to the present through contrasting/comparing. Today, the students got to experience traditional education, which couldn’t be any more different from Pear Tree’s most progressive educational approach!

When parents choose a traditional ‘heritage’ education over a modern, progressive one, it is like choosing an education as seen in the pictures below:

  • segregated boys from girls
  • desks in rows
  • teacher lecturing at the front of the class
  • a focus on rote memorisation
  • and miserable children

When parents talk about wanting their child to be ‘happy’, their choice of a traditional education contradicts that goal.
